The Price of Silence

“We need a million dollars. And you’re going to give it to us because, after all, Camila is still your sister.”

Those were my mother’s first words after seventeen years of absolute silence.

I am thirty-four years old and the CEO of a major real estate firm in Madrid. My mother, Carmen, and my father, Javier, showed up in my office demanding help. They had covered up a serious car accident caused by Camila while drunk driving, which left a young accountant injured. To hide the crime and pay bribes, Camila embezzled a million dollars from the charitable foundation where she worked. With an audit about to start, prison was inevitable.

Seventeen years ago, they kicked me out of the house at sixteen, ruining my credit to fund Camila’s whims. Today they demanded my money. I simply called security to escort them out.

The true story was far worse than what my parents tried to polish in my office.

The young victim of the accident was named Sofía. She was only twenty-two years old with her whole life ahead of her when the luxury SUV driven by my sister Camila ran a red light at high speed. Sofía miraculously survived, but suffered irreparable spinal injuries that left her in a wheelchair.

Far from taking responsibility, my sister fled the scene. That very night, my parents stepped in. They used connections, paid to erase initial police reports, and subtly threatened Sofía’s family into accepting a confidential settlement for a pitiful sum that didn’t even cover the first surgeries.

But Camila’s real problem wasn’t just staying out of prison—it was protecting her social status. She was about to marry Mateo, the heir to one of the most powerful corporate groups in the country. Mateo and his family ran a prestigious foundation dedicated to funding surgeries for underprivileged children. If the scandal broke out, the engagement would be canceled immediately.

Desperate to pay the remaining bribes and maintain the cover-up, Camila used her position in the foundation’s offices to siphon off a million dollars through fake invoices and shell companies. Money meant to save children’s lives ended up in the pockets of those who helped her hide her crime.

When the annual audit was unexpectedly announced, panic seized my family. They knew they only had a few days before the auditors discovered the missing million dollars. That was when Carmen and Javier remembered they had another daughter.

After being thrown out of my office by security, Camila showed up in person the next day. She stormed in, shouting that I was bitter and that if she went to prison, she would ruin my public reputation by telling the media I abandoned my family in their time of need.

I remained unfazed. Staying calm, I opened my desk drawer and put away a USB flash drive. What they didn’t know was that Sofía, the accident victim, worked as an accounting assistant before the crash and had saved digital copies of the real file. Furthermore, my Aunt Lucía had handed over all the evidence of the fraudulent debts my parents created in my name when I was a teenager.

A few days later, I handed all the materials over to the authorities and the foundation’s auditors. The wedding was canceled, Camila was arrested along with those who covered for her, and my parents faced criminal charges. For the first time in seventeen years, justice prevailed.
