Elena was exhausted after a long day of work, but upon entering her apartment, she encountered a surreal scene. Her mother-in-law, Dolores, was comfortably lying on her sofa, feet bandaged, complaining of unbearable pain and demanding constant care. Dolores could barely walk to the bathroom, but strangely had no trouble getting up to fetch her favorite cup of tea. At that moment, her husband, Lu, a professional unemployed for months, walked in from the kitchen and, with an icy tone, said to Elena: “Either you go scrub my mother’s entire house right now, until it shines, or we talk about divorce tomorrow morning. I cannot allow my mother to suffer like this in these conditions!” Elena froze. The threat of divorce for not cleaning the house of the woman who was faking illness was the final straw. She knew she had to make a decision, and that decision would not be scrubbing the floor.

That night, after Lu’s shocking demand, Elena locked herself in the guest room. Instead of cleaning her mother-in-law’s house, she spent hours researching and making calls. She summoned a divorce lawyer, and discreetly began packing her belongings.
The next morning, when Lu and Dolores expected her to kneel to beg forgiveness and start scrubbing, Elena appeared with a suitcase. In front of their stunned gaze, she declared calmly and firmly: “The divorce is off, folks. I am annulling our marriage entirely. I have spoken with a lawyer. Lu, you haven’t contributed a single cent to this home in a year, and Dolores, your supposed illness is nothing more than a show. I am leaving, and I am keeping the apartment, which, by the way, I bought with my inheritance and is in my name.”

Dolores’s face transformed and she tried to get up without crutches to scream, but she forgot her “injury” in her fury, revealing the deceit. Lu, pale, stammered excuses, but it was too late. Elena left the house with her head held high, ready for a new beginning, freed from the burden of supporting a selfish man and a manipulative mother.
