My husband Mateo surprised me with a dream trip to Paris to celebrate our anniversary. He said a loving goodbye at the front door, promising to join me two days later due to work. However, having forgotten my medication, I sneaked back inside twenty minutes later using the service entrance.
Entering silently, I heard celebratory laughter coming from the main living room. I immediately hid in the guest bathroom, leaving the door slightly ajar. My surprise turned into horror: Mateo was toasting with his parents and sister while holding legal documents. With a glass in hand, they joyfully celebrated how they planned to sell the house inherited from my parents and divide my savings while I was away. Discovering that the person I shared my life with was executing a perfect fraud behind my back completely shattered my heart at that moment.

The air of Paris had always been one of my biggest dreams, and Mateo knew it perfectly well. When he handed me the golden envelope with the plane tickets during breakfast, I felt like the luckiest woman in the world. We had gone through difficult months, marked by financial tensions and emotional distance, but that gesture seemed like the reset our relationship desperately needed. Mateo kindly apologized, saying that an urgent company matter prevented him from flying with me that morning, but promised to take the overnight flight the next day. He kissed my cheek, helped me load my luggage into the taxi, and promised that soon we would be walking together along the Seine.
However, fate had other plans. When the taxi had been driving for barely ten minutes, I realized I had left my vital medication case on the entryway table. Knowing I couldn’t easily get them abroad, I asked the driver to turn back to the house. Upon arrival, I decided to enter through the back garden door to save time and avoid ringing the main doorbell. I had a copy of the service key and walked in total silence so as not to disturb Mateo, who was supposed to be focused on business calls.
As soon as I crossed the foyer, the atmosphere felt strange. There was an echo of clinking glasses and enthusiastic voices coming from the living room. Puzzled, I gently set my bag on the floor and crept down the hallway toward the guest bathroom—a strategic spot with a smoked glass door from where I could observe the living room unseen. What I witnessed through the crack froze the blood in my veins.
In the middle of the room stood not only Mateo, but also his parents, Alberto and Elena, along with his sister Sofía. On the coffee table were not work documents, but notary deeds to my property—the house I inherited from my deceased parents before marriage. Mateo held a bottle of champagne and filled everyone’s glasses. “To the perfect plan,” his father said, raising a toast. I heard Mateo laugh with a coldness I had never known before: “Elena is already on her way to the airport. The trip to Paris will keep her busy and out of reach long enough for the lawyer to sign the transfer paperwork using the forged power of attorney.”

Sofía clapped enthusiastically as she reviewed the bank attachments where they intended to drain my family savings accounts. I realized the trip was not a gift of love, but a meticulously calculated trap to get me out of the country and strip me of all my assets without my knowledge. I pressed my hand against my mouth to stifle my sobs of anguish while kneeling on the marble bathroom floor. At that exact moment, the pain of betrayal transformed into cold determination: I would not board that plane to Paris; instead, I would use that very afternoon to legally destroy every single one of their evil plans.
