The phone rang at midnight with devastating news: Mateo, my boyfriend, had been in a tragic car accident and was fighting for his life. His friends, Santiago and Diego, begged me through tears to come to the hospital immediately, as they urgently needed a very rare blood type that only I could donate. Without hesitating for a second, I rushed to the medical center. I endured needles and dizziness, happy to know that my blood would save the love of my life.
As I left the extraction room, weak and leaning against the walls, I passed by a half-open room. I heard familiar laughter. I peeked in discreetly, and my heart stopped completely. Mateo was sitting on the bed, laughing out loud with Santiago, Diego, and Lucía. He was playing with his phone without a single scratch, celebrating how easy it had been to fool me.

There he was, the man for whom I would have given my life, completely healthy and without a single scratch on his body. Words got stuck in my throat as I watched the scene behind the door. Mateo held a glass of soda while openly mocking my desperation.
“I can’t believe Camila fell for it so easily!” Mateo said through contagious laughter. “I told you she would come running as soon as she heard I was on the brink of death. She’s so naive and dramatic.”
Santiago and Diego high-fived, celebrating the success of their cruel prank, while Lucía added ironically: “Well, at least now we know she really would do anything for you, even if it only served to fill a few blood bags for nothing.”
At that moment, the nurse holding the bag with the blood I had just donated walked out of the collection area. Seeing that there was no emergency or serious patient in that room, she looked with disdain at the laughing group and, without hesitation, threw the bag of blood into a medical waste bin. Seeing the vital fluid I had given with so much love and pain end up in the trash was like a direct dagger to my soul.
My legs began to tremble, and I felt the floor disappear under my feet. I pressed my hand against the wall to keep from falling, as dizziness from the donation and sheer humiliation mixed in my head. Mateo and I had been together for three years. I had planned a future by his side, supported him in his hardest moments, and blindly believed every word he said. Discovering that my devotion and love were merely the center of a humiliating game for him and his friends completely shattered me.

I walked slowly toward the hospital exit, trying to process the cruel reality. Every step weighed on me as if I were carrying tons of stone. Tears blurred my vision, but as I passed through the automatic doors into the cold night, something inside me shifted drastically. The crushing pain began to turn into a cold, calculating anger.
I arrived at my apartment, packed absolutely all of Mateo’s belongings into trash bags, and left them out on the street. I changed the door locks and blocked his number along with his friends’ contacts from all my social media. When Mateo returned home hours later, expecting to find me weeping and anxious so he could continue his joke, he only found his things sitting on the sidewalk.
He called me from other numbers, trying to apologize and claiming it was just an innocent prank among friends. But the damage was done. I realized that the blood I left at that hospital didn’t save Mateo’s life, but the truth I discovered that night saved mine from a lifetime of deception and humiliation.
