On the drive home from kindergarten, my grandson Mateo leaned forward in his car seat and whispered, “Grandma, I know a secret Mom and Dad said even the police aren’t supposed to know.” At first I laughed, thinking it was just a child’s imagination, but when he told me about a mysterious red light glowing inside their garage, my smile vanished completely. My daughter Sofía and her husband were keeping something under strict secrecy, warning the boy not to tell anyone, especially me. Worried and consumed by curiosity, I immediately turned the car around. Arriving at my daughter’s driveway, I spotted the faint red glow behind the garage window. I had no idea that whatever was hidden in there would reopen a forgotten chapter of my own past.

Every week I pick up my five-year-old grandson Mateo from kindergarten. Those moments are very special to me. On those drives, Mateo usually talks non-stop about dinosaurs, playground games, what he had for lunch, or other kids’ antics. However, that afternoon took a completely unexpected turn.
Mateo looked at me through the rearview mirror with a very serious face. “There’s something in the garage, Grandma,” he told me. He explained that his parents whispered whenever they went in there and that recently his mother had brought home an old box bought at a flea market, taking it straight to the garage without letting anyone touch it.
The little boy’s words echoed strongly in my mind. I remembered that days earlier, my daughter Sofía had asked me if I still kept old letters or objects from my youth—questions that at the time seemed odd but harmless. Seeing the red glow through the small garage window, my heart began to beat fast. I parked the car, took Mateo by the hand, and walked decisively toward the side door.

Stepping inside, I found Sofía and her husband surrounded by old photographs and an improvised red darkroom light. In the middle of the garage rested an antique wooden box that belonged to my family decades ago. Among the recovered items, Sofía was holding an unopened letter dated forty years ago, written by someone I thought I would never remember again. That unexpected discovery not only explained my family’s mysterious behavior, but also revived precious memories of my youth that I believed were lost forever.
