Three months after burying my fiancé Mateo, I tried to rebuild my life by working as a florist at an elegant event venue. The pain was still devastating, but I needed to keep my mind occupied to avoid collapsing. Everything changed suddenly when I saw his mother, Beatriz, slipping stealthily down a hallway toward the groom’s dressing room. Surprised by her presence, I followed her silently to the cracked door. As I peered inside, my heart stopped completely, and I felt the ground collapse beneath my feet. Standing there was no stranger, but Mateo—alive, smiling, and adjusting his suit to marry another woman. My own mother-in-law, the same woman who held me inconsolably at the funeral, was tenderly adjusting his tie. Discovering such a betrayal left me breathless, but sadness quickly turned into a cold, relentless thirst for revenge.
For weeks, I lived trapped in a nightmare of grief, loneliness, and deep desolation. Mateo and I had spent three beautiful years building a life together, planning every tiny detail of our ideal wedding with excitement and dedication. He was the man I dreamed of growing old with, my unconditional partner in tough times, and the love of my life. However, just six weeks before our big day, a tragic and heartbreaking phone call shattered all my dreams: the police informed me that Mateo had been in a terrible car accident and had tragically died at the scene.
The day of the funeral was without a doubt the most painful moment of my entire existence. I remember the gloomy atmosphere, the closed casket surrounded by white floral wreaths, the non-stop tears of his family, and the endless comforting hugs I received. Beatriz, his mother, held my hand with incredible strength throughout the burial, weeping uncontrollably and repeating through sobs how sorry she was for the premature loss of her beloved son. In the days that followed, she comforted me at my home night after night while I struggled to process a life without him. I sank into a deep depression, unable to comprehend why fate had separated us so cruelly and unfairly.
Unable to handle other people’s weddings due to the immense emotional pain of seeing happy couples start their lives together, I took a break from my floral design job for several weeks. However, bills didn’t wait, and financial necessity forced me to accept a large floral arrangement order for an exclusive event at a luxury private estate outside the city. I thought taking on this challenge would be a good step toward my emotional recovery and keep my mind productively occupied.
I arrived very early at the venue to coordinate the placement of the floral arrangements, scented candles, and main altar decor. As I was adjusting a bouquet near the entrance of the main hall, I spotted a familiar figure rushing toward the private area. It was Beatriz. On her wrist, she proudly wore a distinctive corsage that I had crafted that very morning specifically for the groom’s mother. At first, I thought my grieving mind was playing a trick on me, or that she was attending as a guest for a distant relative. But her behavior was extremely suspicious, nervously checking her surroundings with every step.
I decided to follow her discreetly down the long corridor leading to the private bridal suites. When she slipped into the groom’s room, I approached cautiously and peeked through the narrow crack in the door. What I saw destroyed my reality entirely: Mateo was standing in front of a mirror, wearing the exact suit we had purchased together for our wedding.

“You look absolutely perfect, my dear. Everything will go wonderfully today,” I heard Beatriz say with pride and complicity as she adjusted his tie. “Thanks, Mom. I’m just glad all that drama is behind us and we can finally start fresh,” Mateo replied with a cold smile.
I stood frozen in the hallway, unable to breathe. The man I had wept over for months, the fiancé I had spent countless sleepless nights mourning, was alive and preparing to marry a wealthy woman. His entire death had been a calculated deception orchestrated by him and his mother to collect a massive life insurance payout and escape heavy debts, leaving me abandoned in emotional and financial ruin.
A wave of intense anger replaced my shock. I wasn’t going to let them get away with it. Instead of causing a scene, I stepped back into the gardens, pulled out my phone, and called the police and insurance fraud division. Minutes before the bride walked down the aisle, police officers arrived and arrested Mateo and Beatriz in front of all the guests for insurance fraud, forgery, and staging a death. As they were led away in handcuffs, I knew justice had finally been served.
