It was an ordinary afternoon on the metro, one of those days when the car is packed and no one looks anyone in the eye. Sofía, 24, rode with her hood up, hunched in her seat, silent.
When doña Elena got on, there was no seat left. She looked at the young woman and, without hesitation, pointed a finger at her: “What disrespect! Get up from that seat right now!”
Sofía tried to explain, her voice trembling: “I’m sorry… I don’t feel well, ma’am.” But doña Elena just laughed. “Everyone says the same thing these days. Pure laziness.”
No one in the car said a word. They just watched.
Then, very slowly, Sofía raised her hands to her hood… and what happened next left the whole car in complete silence.
Sofía took off her hood in front of everyone. Her head was completely bald.
The whole car froze. Doña Elena, finger still raised in the air, was left with her mouth open, unable to finish her sentence.
“I have cancer, ma’am,” Sofía said, her voice steady though exhausted. “That’s why I couldn’t get up.”
The silence that followed was the longest of the entire ride. The woman who, minutes earlier, had been mocking her now had nowhere to hide her eyes. She slowly lowered her hand, and for the first time, said nothing.
A nearby passenger whispered, “Poor girl…” Another man, embarrassed, turned his gaze to the window. No one had dared to ask why the young woman kept her hood up. No one had imagined that behind that gray fabric there could be a battle most of us will never have to face.
Doña Elena got off at the next station without saying another word. Some say it was simply her stop. Others say she couldn’t keep looking at the face of the young woman she had humiliated for no reason.
Sofía stayed seated, her hood still resting on her shoulders, looking out the window as if nothing had happened. But for everyone who was there, something had happened: a reminder that we never know what the person next to us is carrying.
