Grandpa’s Secret and Lucía’s Double Life

It was a hot Sunday, and the small restaurant where Lucía worked as a waitress was packed. She rushed from table to table, trying not to make any mistakes. Suddenly, a familiar voice made her freeze. “Lucía! What are you doing here?” It was her grandmother, Doña Isabel. Lucía swallowed hard and walked over to the table. “Grandma, I… work here,” she muttered. Doña Isabel looked at her in amazement and then with disappointment. “But your grandfather Roberto paid off all your student loans years ago, before he died… He promised me,” she said with a trembling voice. Lucía felt her heart break. She had to tell her the truth, but not there. “No, Grandma, I’m still paying 412 dollars a month,” she confessed with tears in her eyes. Doña Isabel turned pale. Something didn’t fit in the story she knew.

Lucía had always admired her grandfather Roberto. He was the pillar of the family, a successful and generous man. When she graduated from college with a considerable debt, he offered to help her. “Don’t worry, my girl, I’ll take care of it,” he had told her with a smile. Grateful, Lucía handed him all the paperwork and thought that chapter was closed.

Years later, Roberto passed away. Despite the grief, Lucía began building her professional life. One day, while checking her mail, she found a letter from the financial institution. It was a collection notice. Thinking it was a mistake, she contacted them. “Your payments are overdue,” they told her. It turned out that Roberto had never paid the debt in full as he had promised. He had only made partial payments, and over time, the amount owed had increased considerably.

Lucía felt betrayed and confused. Why would her grandfather lie to her? And why was her grandmother convinced otherwise? She didn’t want to worry Doña Isabel, so she decided to take responsibility and look for a second job.

The encounter at the restaurant was the turning point. Following Lucía’s revelation, Doña Isabel began investigating the documents Roberto had left behind. She discovered that, in reality, Roberto had been sending the money she thought was paying off Lucía’s loan to an unknown account. Tracing the trail, she arrived at an address and a name she had never heard of: Carmen.

With a heavy heart, Doña Isabel decided to confront the situation. She went to the address and met a woman her age, Carmen, who lived in a small but well-kept house. Upon learning Doña Isabel’s identity, Carmen broke down and confessed everything. It turned out that Roberto had been having a secret relationship with Carmen for years, long before Lucía was born. The money supposedly meant for Lucía’s debt was sent to Carmen to support her and her own family.

Filled with guilt, Carmen showed Doña Isabel the letters Roberto had written to her, in which he asked for forgiveness for his cowardice and begged her not to reveal his secret to his family. Despite the pain of the betrayal, Doña Isabel felt a strange peace upon understanding the truth.

She returned home and sat down with Lucía. She told her everything, hiding nothing. Although shocked, Lucía couldn’t help but feel compassion for Carmen and her grandfather, trapped in a life of lies. Doña Isabel and Lucía decided they couldn’t change the past, but they could change the future. Using part of her inheritance, Doña Isabel paid off Lucía’s debt in full. A grateful Lucía could finally breathe and focus on her career. And Carmen, though lonely, knew Roberto’s secret was finally revealed and that, in some way, the circle was closed.
