The Dinner of Deceit and the Midnight Call

My husband, Mateo, suspiciously insisted on cooking dinner last night for our son Leo and me. He served us a rather aromatic vegetable soup, but within minutes, both of us felt an unbearable dizziness. Realizing the danger, I gave a discreet signal to Leo before collapsing onto the floor. My son understood instantly and also dropped beside me. Pretending to be completely unconscious, we lay motionless on the cold kitchen tiles. In the eerie silence, I heard Mateo walk toward the kitchen door, pull out his phone, and say quietly to someone: “It’s done… soon they will both be gone forever.” A terrifying chill ran down my spine as I realized the horrifying truth.

The relationship between Mateo and me had been cold for the past few months. We had begun arguing frequently over financial issues and the future of our home. However, that Friday afternoon, he returned home in an unusually festive and cheerful mood. Smiling, he announced to us that he wanted to pamper ten-year-old Leo and me by preparing a special dinner with his own hands.

Although it struck me as an odd gesture given our distance, I didn’t want to ruin the mood and gratefully accepted. Mateo spent over two hours in the kitchen, forbidding us from entering and assuring us that he wanted to prepare a secret recipe. When he finally called us to the table, he served an appetizing vegetable cream soup in individual bowls. Curiously, he claimed that he had already eaten while cooking and only poured water into his glass, watching us intently as we took our first spoonfuls.

The flavor had a slightly bitter, somewhat metallic aftertaste, but I didn’t give it immediate thought, assuming it was due to some exotic spice. However, just a few minutes later, my head began to spin heavily, and my vision blurred completely. Looking at Leo, I saw him drop his spoon and sway in his chair, clutching his head in distress.

In that terrifying moment, adrenaline and motherly instinct kicked in. I realized he had put something in our food. I squeezed Leo’s hand under the table and frantically whispered with my eyes for him to close his eyes and let himself fall. Fortunately, Leo reacted quickly: he slid onto the kitchen floor and lay still. I collapsed right beside him, keeping my body limp and breathing as slowly and shallowly as possible so as not to give myself away.

Mateo did not rush to help us. I heard him stand up slowly from his chair, without the slightest trace of panic or surprise in his steps. He walked over to us and used the tip of his shoe to give a gentle nudge to my leg and then to Leo’s arm, checking if we reacted. I kept every muscle in my body relaxed, even though my heart was beating with wild violence in my chest.

Once he was sure we weren’t responding, he walked toward the hallway and pulled out his cell phone. That was when he uttered those chilling words: “It’s done… soon they will both be gone forever. Prepare the property documents and make sure the vehicle is ready. I won’t leave any trace behind.”

That voice did not belong to the man I had shared ten years of my life with; it was the voice of a total stranger filled with coldness and greed. Through the crack of my nearly closed eyelashes, I could see him open the entryway closet and pull out large, thick plastic bags along with some ropes he had previously bought.

Desperation consumed me, but I knew I couldn’t make any impulsive mistakes. If I stood up at that moment, Mateo, who was considerably stronger than me, would easily overpower both Leo and me in our weakened state. I had to act with strategic patience.

Mateo stepped out of the kitchen again for a moment, heading to the garage to prepare the car trunk. I knew that was our only window of opportunity. As soon as I heard the heavy garage door close behind him, I gave Leo’s arm a gentle pinch and whispered in his ear: “Leo, get up quickly, without making a sound.”

Despite the dizziness that was still affecting us, we got up as fast as we could. Instead of trying to run through the front door—which was within sight of the garage—I guided Leo toward the back window of the laundry room. With trembling hands, I managed to unlatch the lock and opened it with extreme care so as not to make any creaking sounds.

We jumped out into the backyard and ran through the darkness across the neighbors’ yards until we reached the house of Mrs. Elena, an elderly woman who lived two blocks away and with whom I maintained a good friendship. When she saw us pale, breathless, and terrified, she immediately brought us inside. In a faltering voice, I briefly explained the situation while urgently dialing emergency services.

The police arrived at our home within minutes with two patrol cars. The blue and red lights illuminated the entire street just as Mateo was coming out of the house carrying one of the heavy bags. The officers caught him red-handed and immediately subdued him in the driveway.

Subsequent investigations revealed a chilling truth: Mateo had accumulated massive debts from illegal gambling and had recently taken out a million-dollar life insurance policy on both my son and me. His plan was to put us to sleep with a potent veterinary sedative, stage a tragic traffic accident on a remote road, and collect the payouts to settle his debts and flee the country.

Thanks to the medical analysis performed on us that same night at the hospital, specialists were able to counteract the sedative in time and confirm the presence of the substance in our systems, which served as irrefutable evidence during the trial. Mateo was sentenced to several decades in prison without the possibility of parole. Today, Leo and I are trying to rebuild our lives away from the shadow of that deadly deceit, thankful every day for the quick cleverness that saved our lives during that dark dinner.
