I saved for months for my son’s treatment and swimming lessons, but when I went to pay, the account was empty

For six long months, I saved every single penny to cover the medicine and swimming therapy for our little Mateo, who suffers from a respiratory condition. My husband, Sergio, had been unemployed for over eight months, so the entire financial burden fell on my shoulders. I worked day and night with one single goal: to protect my son’s health. The morning we went to register Mateo at the sports and medical center, I confidently pulled out my card, but the payment was declined. I immediately opened my banking app, and my heart stopped: our savings account was almost at zero. Four mysterious transfers made early that morning had wiped out all my hard work. Sergio stood next to me, refusing to look me in the eye, keeping a secret that would change our lives forever.

The reception area of the swimming academy smelled of chlorine and hope. Mateo was wearing his little shark-shaped backpack on his shoulder, looking up at me with bright, excited eyes. Months ago, the doctor had recommended swimming as a vital therapy to strengthen his lungs after a severe bout of bronchitis almost hospitalized him last year. To me, that day wasn’t just a simple registration: it was the reward for a monumental effort.

For the past six months, my life had been a non-stop juggling act. Sergio, my husband, had lost his job as an accountant at a small firm that shut down unexpectedly. Although he searched for work enthusiastically at first, as the months went on, he sank into deep apathy. He spent his days locked in the bedroom in front of the computer, claiming he was sending out resumes, though he never got any calls. Meanwhile, I took on double shifts at the public library and started baking custom cakes at night. I barely slept four hours a day, but watching the balance grow in our savings account dedicated to Mateo gave me the energy I lacked.

“That will be $850 for the quarterly therapy package and the initial medical evaluation, Mrs. Elena,” the receptionist said with a warm smile.

I handed over my debit card with a deep sigh of relief. “Finally,” I thought to myself. Mateo hopped excitedly beside me. However, the harsh beep of the card reader shattered the moment.

“Transaction declined. Insufficient funds,” the woman announced.

A knot formed in my stomach. I thought it was just a network error.

“Please try again. I’m positive there is enough money.”

She swiped the card a second time, but the result was identical. With shaking hands, I pulled out my phone and logged into the banking app. The figure on the screen felt like a nightmare: instead of the nearly $3,500 I had painfully accumulated dollar by dollar, the balance showed a mere $14.20.

I checked the transaction history. Between 2:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. that very morning, four large wire transfers had been made to an unfamiliar account named “Inversiones del Norte.”

I turned to Sergio. He was standing a step behind me, staring blankly at the marble floor, sweating despite the air conditioning. His jaw was clenched, and his hands were trembling inside his pockets.

“Sergio… what is this? What happened to Mateo’s money?” I asked, my voice cracking as I tried to stay calm in front of our son.

He didn’t answer. He took Mateo’s hand, walked us out to the parking lot, and there the truth hit me like a ton of bricks. Sergio hadn’t been looking for work for months; he had fallen into the dark world of online gambling and fake cryptocurrency investment platforms. Trying to “recover” an initial loss from his own savings, he decided to take the money meant for our son’s health, convinced he would double it overnight and put it back before I ever noticed. He lost every single cent in a matter of hours.

In that moment, looking at the tears in my son’s eyes—who couldn’t understand why he wasn’t going to have his lessons—I realized I hadn’t just lost six months of hard-earned savings; I had lost all trust in the man I shared my life with. I made up my mind that I would never give up on Mateo, but I would also never take another step alongside Sergio.
