I arrived home exhausted after giving birth to my twin girls, expecting a warm home and a comforting hug from my husband, Mateo. However, standing out in the middle of the kitchen was a luxurious new refrigerator with a giant red bow and a sign that read: “Only for Mateo and Mom ♡”. Next to it, my mother-in-law, Doña Beatriz, smiled arrogantly while pointing at our old, noisy fridge. Mateo crossed his arms and told me coldly: “Starting today, my mom’s food and mine will go in the new fridge. In the old one, you’ll put yours and the babies’.” My mother-in-law chimed in, saying they didn’t intend to share their gourmet food with someone who brought no income. My heart broke seeing the coldness with which they treated me.

The exhaustion from the hospital stay weighed heavily on my shoulders. Holding my two newborns in my arms while crossing the threshold of my own home should have been the happiest moment of my life, but the scene awaiting me in the kitchen transformed joy into an immediate nightmare. Instead of a warm welcome or a hot meal prepared to help me recover my strength, I was met with an absurd family division symbolized by two home appliances.
Mateo and his mother, Doña Beatriz, had meticulously planned this separation. During the nine months of my pregnancy, Doña Beatriz had taken every opportunity to remind everyone that I had been forced to leave my job due to medical complications, labeling me an economic burden on her son. However, I never imagined her hostility would reach the extreme of dividing the food inside the house.
When I demanded an explanation, Mateo looked at me without a trace of empathy. He explained that his mother would be moving in temporarily to “take care of him” and that she would only pay for the high-end food they both consumed. “My mom deserves to eat well, and we shouldn’t have to subsidize your tastes or extra expenses now that you’re not working,” he stated with icy coldness. Doña Beatriz added mockingly that the old refrigerator had more than enough space for baby formula and the basic food I could afford with my savings.
I waited in silence while settling the twins into their cribs. Anger and humiliation quickly turned into absolute determination. What Mateo and his mother didn’t know was that during my medical leave, I hadn’t been sitting idle. I had been working remotely as an independent consultant and had just received payment for a major project, in addition to having the unconditional support of my family.

That very afternoon, without arguing or raising my voice, I called a moving company and a family lawyer. While Mateo and his mother sat contentedly enjoying their exclusive dinner in front of the new refrigerator, I ordered all my belongings and my daughters’ things to be packed up. When Mateo saw the movers carrying our stuff out, he tried to stop me, shouting that I was exaggerating.
I handed him my wedding ring along with my lawyer’s business card. I firmly made it clear that if he preferred to divide food and life with his mother rather than support his wife and newborn twins, he could now have the entire refrigerator and house all to themselves, along with a divorce lawsuit and child support claim. I left for my parents’ home, leaving behind a toxic relationship to start a new life filled with dignity and love for my daughters.
