The Truth Under the Rain

A fierce storm was raging through the city when I arrived at my ex-husband’s mansion to pick up my fifteen-year-old daughter. What I found as I passed through the gate froze my heart. My little girl was lying unconscious on the soaked ground, beneath the unforgiving rain. Desperate, I fell to my knees, pulled her into my arms, and began screaming for help. Standing under the covered entrance, my ex-husband and his new partner watched us with absolute coldness. When I tearfully demanded an explanation, he coldly replied: “She chose to stay out there.” I didn’t waste a single second arguing. I immediately called emergency services while clutching my daughter’s freezing body. What I didn’t realize

My relationship with my ex-husband, Mateo, had always been difficult after our divorce, but I never imagined his coldness would go as far as putting our own daughter’s life, Sofia, in danger. That afternoon, an unexpected tropical storm was raging violently over the city. Thunder rumbled, and rain poured down in torrents. We had agreed that Sofia would spend the weekend at Mateo’s luxurious residence, but a strange gut feeling urged me to go get her earlier than planned.

When I reached the property entrance, the gates of the villa were wide open. I drove up the driveway, and as I stopped the car, the headlights illuminated a nightmarish scene. In the middle of the stone courtyard, fully exposed to the pouring rain, lay a motionless figure. I sprinted out of the car, completely unbothered by getting soaked. It was Sofia. She was unconscious, drenched, her lips blue from the cold, and a thin stream of blood running down her forehead.

I fell to my knees on the wet stone and held her tightly in my arms, trying to shield her with my body while weeping desperately and screaming for help. It was then that I looked up toward the covered porch of the house. Mateo and his new wife, Valeria, were standing there, completely dry, watching me with crossed arms and an indifference that chilled my blood far more than the rain itself.

“What did you do to her?! Help me, please!” I screamed, my voice cracking with panic.

Mateo took a step forward, but with no intention of coming closer. In a cold voice devoid of any paternal warmth, he replied, “She chose to stay out there. Your daughter is disobedient and spoiled.” Valeria simply looked away with disdain, adjusting her coat without saying a word.

In that instant, I realized that begging those monsters for mercy was pointless. With trembling hands, I pulled my phone from my pocket and dialed emergency services. Through sobs, I gave the operator the exact address and begged them to send an ambulance immediately, reporting that my daughter was unresponsive and showing severe signs of hypothermia and trauma. During the agonizing minutes waiting for medical help, I kept Sofia pressed against my chest, whispering in her ear and begging her to hold on.

The ambulance sirens finally echoed in the distance, accompanied by a police cruiser that had been dispatched due to the severity of the call. The paramedics acted swiftly, stabilizing Sofia, wrapping her in a thermal blanket, and loading her onto the stretcher. Meanwhile, two police officers approached Mateo and Valeria to demand statements regarding what had occurred.

At the hospital, anguish consumed me in the waiting room. After hours of agonizing uncertainty, the doctor in charge came out to give me news. Sofia had suffered a mild concussion from a blow to the head and severe hypothermia, but fortunately, she was out of danger. When she was finally able to wake up and speak, the truth came to light.

Sofia told me through tears that she had gotten into an argument with Valeria after refusing to obey a humiliating order. Mateo, instead of defending his daughter, shoved her out of the house into the rain. Trying to get back inside, Sofia slipped on the wet steps, struck her head against the stone edge, and lost consciousness. Instead of helping her, Mateo and Valeria closed the door and left her lying helpless in the storm.

The authorities acted with the full force of the law. Sofia’s statement, combined with the medical report and security camera footage seized by the police from the mansion, served as irrefutable evidence of criminal negligence and child abandonment. Mateo was arrested that very night and immediately lost all custody rights. Although the trauma of that night would leave deep scars, I promised myself that I would never allow anyone to put my daughter in danger again.
