My daughter Sofía came home radiant to introduce me to her fiancé, Mateo. Seeing the joy on her face, overcoming years of insecurity due to the birthmark covering part of her face, filled my heart with an indescribable emotion. Everything felt like a dream come true. We had dinner amidst laughter and warm memories. However, as soon as Sofía got up from the table and walked into the kitchen to bring dessert, the atmosphere in the dining room changed drastically. Mateo leaned toward me, fixed his cold gaze directly into my eyes, and whispered in a firm, calculating voice: “I did my part of the deal. Now it’s your turn to deliver what was promised.” My heart stopped instantly at his words.

All her life, Sofía had been my greatest pride and also my greatest concern. She was born with a striking wine-colored birthmark on the right side of her face. In a world obsessed with physical perfection, that mark became a heavy burden for her during her teenage years. Despite her intelligence, sweetness, and talent, the stares in the street and whispered comments had deeply wounded her self-esteem. As a father, I spent years wishing I could take away her pain and see her love herself just as she was.
So when she called me excitedly to tell me she had met Mateo and that he loved her unconditionally, I felt an immense sense of relief. According to her, Mateo was an attentive, caring man who was completely indifferent to society’s superficial standards. When she announced they were engaged and coming to my house for dinner to officially introduce him before the wedding, I prepared the evening with the utmost enthusiasm.
The night began idyllically. Mateo arrived with flowers and a bottle of wine. During dinner, he was polite, attentive, and extraordinarily affectionate toward Sofía. He held her hand, looked into her eyes, and praised her every gesture. Seeing my daughter smile with a radiant confidence I thought was lost forever moved me to tears. I believed fate had finally compensated her for all those years of suffering.
However, the illusion shattered in a second. After dinner, Sofía stood up smiling to head to the kitchen to serve coffee and dessert. As soon as her steps faded away and we were left alone, Mateo’s expression transformed completely. The warmth on his face vanished, replaced by a cold, calculating detachment.
He leaned across the table toward me and said softly: “I did my part of the deal. Now it’s your turn.”
I froze completely. “What are you talking about, Mateo?” I asked, trying to remain calm while my mind desperately searched for a logical explanation.
Mateo smirked arrogantly. “Don’t play dumb. I had to date her for months, endure people’s stares in the street, and publicly commit to the girl with the mark on her face just to clean up your family’s reputation in front of investors. Your business partner paid the first half of my debt so I’d agree to the deal, but you promised to settle the second half before the wedding. My patience has limits.”
His words hit my chest like a heavy blow. In an instant, I understood the terrifying truth. Months ago, my business partner had suggested hiring a trusted acquaintance to help Sofía gain social confidence by posing as a suitor. I had flatly refused such an absurdity—or so I thought. What I didn’t know was that my partner, desperate to close a multi-million dollar deal with wealthy investors who questioned our company’s public image, had negotiated behind my back with Mateo, using corporate funds to pay him and convince investors that our family was stable and perfect.

I felt a surge of intense rage and profound disgust. I looked at Mateo—a paid actor ruthlessly playing with my daughter’s feelings purely for money. I heard Sofía’s footsteps returning from the kitchen with the coffee tray. I had only a few seconds to decide how to act.
If I revealed the truth right then, Sofía’s heart would break into a thousand pieces in the cruelest way imaginable. But allowing her to marry a heartless opportunist was a far worse fate.
The moment Sofía walked into the dining room with a radiant smile, I stood up. I looked Mateo in the eyes and said with absolute coldness: “Dinner is over. Mateo has to leave right now, and he is never coming back to this house.”
Sofía dropped the tray in horror. “Dad, what are you talking about? What happened?” she cried out through tears.
I looked at Mateo and warned him that if he didn’t walk out the door that very second, I would call the police and report the extortion to the media. Seeing my unwavering determination, Mateo grabbed his jacket and left without another word.
That night was the hardest of my life. I sat down with Sofía and told her everything about my partner’s manipulation and Mateo’s true nature. We cried together for hours. Although the shock was devastating for her, over time she realized that escaping such a cold deception was a blessing in disguise. I immediately cut ties with my business partner, filed the necessary lawsuits, and devoted myself to supporting my daughter. Today, Sofía has healed, learned to value herself without needing anyone’s approval, and walks with her head held high, knowing her true worth will never depend on a face or a contract.
